Bianca Okafor sees everything. She sees the lie in the textbook, the word in her file, the drawer where her father keeps the life this country told him did not count. She is right about all of it, and no one will admit it, and so the fury has nowhere to go but a dented locker and nineteen notebooks under her bed, full of the truest writing in her whole school, read by no one. Then a detention puts her in a room with Dr. Osei, an unhurried old substitute who does the crossword in pen and asks her one question no one has ever asked: not what she did, but whether what she writes is worth reading. What he offers her is a door, into a real American city on a real river, in the autumn of 1898, where Black families own the businesses and hold the offices and run the only Black daily newspaper in the country, and where none of them yet know what is coming in November. Bianca already knows how it ends. She has read what they did, and worse, she has read how they hid it, how they burned the truth and then wrote their own and taught it for a hundred years. What she does not know is the thing the past is about to teach her: that a truth kept safe is a truth kept useless, that the record is not the coward's version of the fight but its bravest front, and that the one war the machine can never win is the one that happens later, in the telling.
